MOSES PROJECT

MOSES PROJECT: Participants

Juan Vicente Sanchez Hernandez

Home: Cerro Negro, San Agustin
Birthday: November 6, 1990
Siblings: 1 older and 2 younger
Education: Finished grade 6 in 2006

Vicente is the oldest student to join us this year, although he is younger than Luis was at the start of last year. Although older, Vicente is one who more recently completed grade 6 because his village went 6 years without a teacher. Given that they are so removed from the next closest community, this simply meant that all the youth in the community went without school for those 6 years.

When Vicente finished grade 6 he then proceeded to take computer classes in San Agustin each Friday and Saturday. Because it is a 2 hour walk each direction and there is no bus service to his community, this meant that Vicente would walk to school on Friday and spend the night at the house of a local teacher. Then, after classes on Saturday, he would make the trek back home to help his family in the traditional farming chores. Vicente's mom was not able to attend the interview process because she broke her leg a couple years ago and it never set well (likely never saw a doctor) and now she can't make the 2 hour trek to San Agustin where the buses run.

Vicente heard about the project through a teacher in San Agustin who spread the word for us. The order in which Vicente names off his reasons for joining the program are: improve his future, learn the trades and learn from Fredy regarding improved agricultural opportunities.
