Henrry Leonardo Castrón Gutierrez
Home: Prado de la CrúzBirthday: March 14, 1992
Siblings: 8 older and 0 younger
Education: Finished grade 6 this year
Henrry is the first participat that I met in person. As the youngest of 9 children, he is "expendable" from the family workforce. His mom surpised us in the interview as a very confident woman in a society where rural moms are normally very quite in public.
To get to Henrry's village you have to cross a river that has an interesting bridge -- basically it is a concrete road built so that the river flows over it rather than under it as is the case with most bridges... El Prado de la Cruz just installed a water system this past year, so now they don't have to trek down the valley to get their water anymore. Electricity is still a ways off. To my knowledge, none of Henrry's older siblings have ever studied beyond 6th grade and all his brothers work as farm laborers for the small farms around their community.
Henrry is one of the few boys in the program who currently actually wants to study agriculture and return to his home village to improve the processes and economics of small farms. The picture below showing Henrry's school which contains one teacher (most days) and about 34 students this year. Henrry and one other girl were the only members of grade 6 this year.
