Darwin was selected in the process of interviews that occured to replace Denis Lemus (who was unable to join the program at the outset due to health complications with his father). Regardless of how he came to join us, we have been very happy that Darwin joined our team. He is quiet, but not necessarily shy. At the same time he is quite confident and was promptly elected President of the cooperative that the youth formed as part of the program to manage the resources of the agricultural aspects of the project.
Darwin is the one participant who truly lives in the "campo" -- that is, he lives outside of any identifiable town. Legally the houses that tend to dot the trail running up the valley are apparently part of a town, but you wouldn't know it. There is now water which they brought across the valley from a source high up on the other side. Electricity is still some years off at the best. Sewer lines? Well, they don't really exist as is the case for all of the other participants. The picture shows the trail that leads to Darwin's home. Hopefully you can grasp how steep it is... and therefore how slippery it must be when it rains. Still the people from his little area tred up and down this trail carrying sacks of corn and beans in the day and night.
